Some of the best-selling fly reels are the models from the 1970-90s period. Hand-built in Alnwick by time-served craftsmen, each reel was tested prior to being offered for sale.
Marquis, Lightweight, Princess and the larger St Aiden and St Andrew models are all in demand still today. Check out our current stock of these here.
If asked “Are they collector or user reels?” then I suggest both.
Some collectors of the range want mint boxed examples with papers while anglers buy good condition mechanically sound ones. An enviable range of line ratings from #1 to #10 suit most of our freshwater fly fishing. Few other makers in this period could compete with such a diversity of models. Multiplier geared examples always command a higher price based on the limited number produced against standard models. Additionally, most of the reels can be fished left- or right-hand wind, the line guides being reversed or in a twin set formation. The foot blades are fairly standard in the 60-70mm length meaning they can be fished on cane, glass fibre, and carbon rods with regular reel fittings.

Keep this handy reference guide which gives recommended line ratings and backing capacity. New technology low diameter lines and braid backing will allow more than stated here. It just feels and looks right fishing a classic or vintage reel on the same era rod. If you need further help drop us an email or give us a call.
