Peetz reels of British Colombia, Canada have a special link to England’s famous Nottingham reels. The Peetz Company was established in 1925 by master jeweller Boris Cecil Peetz. A fishing fanatic he incorporated his skills into making timeless works of art in wood and brass. He based his reels on the simplicity of the English Nottingham reels which had been around since c 1840. Using the well-worn phrase, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” he changed little in design or application. Many Pacific Northwest anglers used these reels to virtual destruction. Rough seas, salt water and large fish all failed to diminish the capability of most of these models. Seasoned red mahogany wood and brass fittings were the simple solutions to practicality and longevity. Many patterns have been developed over the years but it is strange that Peetz started making wood reels when England was looking at other developments and materials and fading them out. Modern lightweight alloys were replacing wood and brass from the 1890,s so the writing was on the wall… or was it? It’s a pleasant surprise to find even to this day they are producing a reel similar to this one here. The Classic 6” wood reel is selling at $229. An upgraded artisan beautifully decorated Banshee reel with cost you approx…  $400. The new Steel Wheel selling for a little less. Designed for the traditional style angler they provide a broad spectrum or patterns and style series over the years and continue to do so.
