Orvis USA Patent 4162048 3.25″ alloy fly reel with external rubber slide brake device, x rare

In with a collection of USA reels we have just bought this one stands out.. An interesting design from Orvis and dating to the 1980’s. The SSS is an anti-reverse fly reel and exclusive to Orvis under USA Patent 4162048. Features developed from the requisites of trout, Steelhead, salmon, and saltwater anglers led to its curious appearance. Both frame and spool and bar stock aluminium and internal components are of stainless steel and naval bronze to resist corrosion. Spool removed is by a simple spring pin in the backplate center meaning no tools are required. It’s the external ribbed rubber brake that changes the look of this reel. A slide adjuster alters the drag, easy to use and effective. The SSS Featherweight is 3.25” in diameter with capacity for a WF8 line and 200 yards of backing. An excellent all-round fresh and saltwater reel plus a rarity for the angler or collector
