Looking After the Waters That Give Us So Much

For many of us, a day spent by a river is about far more than catching fish. It’s the chance to enjoy wild places, watch kingfishers flash past, listen to the sound of flowing water, and escape the pace of everyday life.

But our rivers face increasing pressure from pollution, habitat loss and climate change. Looking after them benefits every angler, whether you fish for trout, salmon, grayling, coarse species, or simply enjoy spending time by the water.

This July, the team at Sportfish are once again running Sportfish Rivers Month – a nationwide campaign encouraging anglers and river lovers to get involved in simple actions that help protect and improve our waterways.

Whether it’s spending an hour litter picking, reporting pollution, supporting your local river trust, taking part in a clean-up event, or simply spreading awareness on social media, every small action makes a difference.

As a little incentive, Sportfish are also giving away some fantastic prizes to those who share their efforts online using #SportfishRiversMonth, including:

  • A Sage Arrow fly rod
  • A day’s fishing on the River Test or River Itchen
  • A £200 Sportfish voucher
  • Free beer for a year!

At Thomas Turner, we’re fortunate to handle tackle with decades—sometimes centuries—of history behind it. Many of the rods and reels that pass through our hands were built to fish rivers that are still enjoyed today. Preserving those waters means future generations can continue making memories with tackle both old and new.

Healthy rivers support healthy fish populations, thriving wildlife and, ultimately, the future of the sport we all enjoy.

If you’re heading out this month, why not take a rubbish bag with you, spend a few minutes clearing the bank, or support a local conservation project? It doesn’t take much to make a positive impact.

Let’s all do our bit this July.

Tight lines!
