Following the successful launch of the cased fish from the Peter Wheat collection we are ready to start listing some of the amazing artworks.
Curated over a lifetime there are some amazing and highly desirable items from the likes of Denys Watkins-Pitchford, Bernard Venables, David Carl Forbes, John Searl and Maurice Ingham.
Today we will focus on the works of Denys Watkins-Pitchford or ‘BB’ as he was commonly known as collected by Peter and in the process of being published on our website.
My own knowledge of ‘BB’ goes back to the early days of carp fishing and his legendary book ‘Confessions of a Carp Fisher” published in 1950. A year later ‘BB’ found himself fishing at Mapperley Reservoir with Dick Walker and Maurice Ingham discussing why carp fishing was not more popular. From this conversation the Carp Catchers’ Club evolved. The rest is history as they say!
To start with we have an amazing original scraperboard by ‘BB’ entitled “The Haunt of Chub”.
This very early work depicts The Old Water Mill and comes from his book ‘The Fisherman’s Bedside Book’ page 519 published in 1945.
There are a number of annotations from both Peter and ‘BB’ regarding the history of the artwork and clear signatures from both.
Definitely one for the Collector.
Also included is a signed original drawing from The Birds of the Lonely Lake and another from Lepus the Brown Hare.
This is one of my favourites depicting a Heron hiding amongst the reeds. These and others are in the process of being published.
We are delighted to be able to offer 4 original paintings as well.
Walk in the Surf
Mallard Ducks Dropping in Cley Marshes
Goldfinches on Teasel in a Country Lane
A Bullfinch Pair on a Snowy Lane; Sunlit
Please keep an eye on our website as we increase the momentum in publishing items
from this outstanding collection both from ‘BB’ and other angling luminaries.
