Treen trinket box with a fishy tale for tea

Most fishing tackle collectors enjoy trinkets, gadgets and accessories to mix in with the display of the more serious items in their collections.

This treen wooden trinket box is one such example.

Treen boxes were a favourite with the travelling and wealthy Victorians. This box, measuring 4-1/4” x 3-1/4” x 2” has a comic angling scene to the lid and would have been a gift.

A sportsman asks, “Have you caught anything today sir?” The seated angler replies “Yes Sir I have, a monster cold and a few aches and pains”. Such was the humour in Victorian times, also well illustrated on many post cards and posters.

This particular box is filled with a good collection of French gut casts in paper envelopes, “Grand Magasins du Louvre, Articles de PECHE”.

A Pictorial Society Est. 1837 header and Lipton’s paper label and silver interior indicates perhaps this started life as a gift tea box to someone special, a great piece of historic ephemera. In stock at the time of writing, click here to buy it.
