Allcock’s Commodore 6 inch Saltwater Boat Reel
This is a serious hunk of metal aimed at those looking for skate, tope, conger. etc as their catalogue entry states. Model C605 with friction brake to the rear.
Also from the 1968 catalogue – “In stainless steel, of rugged construction and built to carry 300 yds of 120lb B.S. braided line. Lined friction brake, screw drag, strong optional check, easy grip handle, stout Bickerdyke line guard, stainless steel throughout. 6 inch diameter.”
This reel was selected for exhibition at the Council of Industrial Design’s London show-room when it was manufactured.
This reel also has a small sticker on the back – “Made by Noris Shakespeare England” which it wasn’t of course as the Allcocks stamp on the foot bracket shows, but probably retailed by them originally then.
The steel certainly is not stainless any more but it is still a great solid piece of engineering and a real statement piece for any collection. No doubt it would clean up a little better and it still turns with a lively resounding click of the ratchet. The drag knob is also operational still as is the ratchet on/off sliding button.
