J W Young collections wanted

Most of us at some time will have bought, sold or collected J W Young’s reels. One of the iconic reel makers for over 100 years.

Commencing business in 1884 they manufactured many exciting and unusual reels for an assortment of other makers or retailers throughout their history.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim Young more than a few times in the 1980s when I had my tackle shop in Stoke on Trent. We became agents and retailers for his reels. Stocking Purist models, saltwater & salmon fly reels, sets of Microdex display reels and so on. I initially sourced the yummy custom wood boxes for the Purist range for Jim through one of my local woodworking contacts.

The range for collectors is vast. If you move to the 1950’s onwards then the fabulous on fire black and orange boxes make a great backdrop for any reel collection.

Putting aside the early reels, like the superior Duplex fly, alloy centrepins etc. we have buyers for mint condition and boxed examples of the later range.

The Centrepins are collected and fished by many in the UK and Europe with Rapidex, Trudex, Landex and Seldex leading the way. The iconic Ambidex in all its varieties is popular with coarse anglers for canal, river or pond fishing.

Many of us are of the age to remember when we couldn’t afford to buy one. Nose pressed against the tackle shop window, wishing for an Ambidex and coming out with an Intrepid Boyo!

Fly reels sell worldwide with a particular following for the smaller Beaudex 3” models and lightweight Valdex dry fly reels.

In short, if you have a good mixed collection of Youngs reel, or any others, now is the time to sell and perhaps reinvest in other tackle collectables

Keep Safe.
