German Artificial Fly tying book, 1903, Anton Gruner by Johann Bergauer flies to gut

I’m thrilled with this tome, which recently landed on my desk.
It dates back to 1905 and is handwritten in ‘Sütterlin’, sometimes also called ‘German script’, nicely bound in leather with the title, translating to ‘Fly pattern book for sportfishing’, set in gilt letters.

It is a book about flyfishing, more specifically about fly patterns. It contains about 100 flies, all tied to gut, presented with their description, zoological names and history. Each fly sits in a field on the right-hand page, with a description in the corresponding field on the left page.
The first few pages are transcriptions from famous flyfishing and fly tying books.

The book starts with a dedication page showing a drawing of a fisherman standing on a riverbank, as well as an early photograph of the person this book is dedicated to.
It has been produced and written in German by an Austrian gentleman and given as a present to an Austrian noble fisherman.
I’m planning to research the book and the two families it goes back to. It would be very pleasing if I can manage to find some members of the families living today and the book could go back to where it stems from. Also, it would be very interesting to find out how it made its way to England, where I got it from.
So, this post is the start of a series of posts to come, where, hopefully, I will be able to shed some light on this book and its fascinating story.

And for our German readers:

Handgeschrieben 1905 in Sütterlin.
