Nottingham to Oslo

We have just been contacted by Lasse Merkesda, of the Nordisk Fishing Tackle Shop in Oslo, Norway where a customer had brought in an old wooden reel to investigate its history.

This is a Nottingham pattern English wood and brass starback reel. Probably made by either Slater of Newark or Heatons of Birmingham and dates c 1920.

Bickerdyke line guide
Two types of line guides on this vintage wooden reel.

Unusually it’s fitted with both the Bickerdyke frame-mounted brass wire line guide and the opional Heans sliding eye guide. You can never have too many line guides!

The starback is an odd shape with the tapered side to the cross,  and the check on/off button is Slater style in its form. Amazing that these reels travelled the world and pop up in the most unsual places!

Nice to hear from our Norwegian friends, my family coming from Arendal which is not far from them. Makes it all a little cosy.
